ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

‘I acknowledge and pay respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.’

MORE THAN A WORD. RECONCILIATION TAKES ACTION

Reconciliation week is over, but it the learning and action doesn’t stop now. It should be ongoing. Here is an easy and practical way to keep the Indigenous perspectives front and centre. I have used these 8 ways of learning symbols, displaying them in the classroom, and mentioning one or more each day. It becomes ‘normal’ that you refer to the symbols. Resources for this and other activities are listed below.

Great to see two weekends of Indigenous AFL jumpers. Listening to the Indigenous players stories, symbols and performances before the games are moving to see and hear.

This Resilience Program has been tried, adapted and tested over 6 years for 5-9 year olds, and can easily be adapted for HOME SCHOOLING, as well as for older students. It covers every Social and Emotional Learning area, and provides coping strategies, which are good for both children and adults. The underlying focus is always RESILIENCE. The Workbook can be used with or without the Lesson Plans. It would also be beneficial for every child and adult to begin a Gratitude Journal, listing or talking about 3 good things that have happened to them that day. Happiness and anxiety can be reduced by doing this.

Each page has an ‘At Home’ section on the bottom of the page, so you know what the lesson is focused on e.g. At Home: We have talked about different feelings, talk about the ones they have drawn and any others they understand. Every feeling is OK, it’s how we deal with them that counts. How do you deal with feelings?

Feedback: We have been using some of your resources this year to support our Positive Education Program. We have nothing but great feedback to give you! We have enjoyed the continuation of the lessons ….. they understood each concept and they have enjoyed .. singing songs to support different ideas. Templestowe
To order go to https://www.bepositiveprogram.com.au/product/junior-workbook/ for the hard copy book $10 plus postage, or https://www.bepositiveprogram.com.au/product/ebook-junior-workbook/ for the eBook $25. Lesson Plans, posters and a Gratitude Journal is also available from the website.

Harmony Day Cool Text: Logo and Button GeneratorCreate Your Own Logo

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURS THIS HARMONY DAY

This year on Harmony Day why not talk about getting to know your neighbours, workmates and classmates better?? Everyone from 1-101 can do this at their own level. Ask questions about how they are the same and different:

  • things they like
  • things they do
  • their talents
  • family
  • holidays
  • houses
  • favourite movies
  • friends
  • hobbies etc.

Even though we may look different on the outside, on the inside we are ALL THE SAME.

So we should treat each other equally. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

You have to BE a good friend to MAKE a good friend.

Mental Health day 10/10

‘I am living in a nightmare everyday, and nobody understands. I just can’t cope anymore.’

This statement shocked me into action, but not without asking first! I had listened and physically helped before, but this was different. They were trying to solve the problems themselves, which is always better, but being misunderstood for 5 months had dulled any sense of resilience, will power, or resolve that anyone could or would understand. I thought the ‘lowest’ had already been and gone, but it was back again with a bigger wall. After 3 days of researching, phoning, blogging and then FINALLY contacting a VERY compassionate, understanding person, who just wanted to go and hug the person, we are slowly but surely, on the way to resolving some of the problems. I was lucky I found the right contact, but that DOESN’T always happen, and people are left floundering.

Today is a day we should ask every family member, friend, student and workmate RUOK, ARE YOU REALLY OK? So many people can present themselves to others as coping, happy, telling jokes, doing their job well, helping others, but on the INSIDE they are broken, sad, worried and need help themselves. You never know what they came from this morning, last night, last week, last year, or even a trauma from many years ago.

(I got this image from FB, so I cannot site the original source.)

LOOK FOR THE SIGNS on the outside

Sighing, withdrawing, fidgety, can’t sit still, tired or hypo, headaches, numbness, too busy or uninterested, never having ‘me’ time, bored, losing temper, feeling sick, overwhelmed, needing to go the the toilet a lot, frowning, shaky voice, rolling eyes, never having an opinion, ‘whatever’ or over complaining, not caring about eating, their clothes, not getting out, tears etc. The list can be endless.

Then there are things we can’t see- the butterflies in the tummy, the pounding heart,  sweating, feeling overwhelmed, not wanting to go places or join in, tight jaw, shoulders, neck, lump in your throat, can’t talk properly, goose bumps, dry mouth, sweaty, feeling dizzy, hunger pains, can’t sleep, getting shivers or shaking knees…..

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Listen, ACKNOWLEDGE their fears and feelings, take them for a walk, offer water, deep breathing, find something good about the day so far, sit with them, hug them, play their favourite music, find them a book, play sport with them, do mindfulness, draw, cook, eat, take them away from a situation that isn’t good, sit on the grass, sand, beach, in the park, ask if you can help, help them work out what to do if practical……

DON’T say ‘Don’t worry about it’

ACTS OF KINDNESS MAKE US ALL BETTER PEOPLE

Be gentle with the people you meet and deal with everyday, look on the INSIDE not the OUTSIDE.

HAVE A GREAT DAY                by Barb Bellesini

Each Class has been talking about Harmony Day. We have looked at what ‘Every Face has a Place’ (KidsMatter slogan) means, as well as revisiting Anti Bullying. The seniors and middles made posters, juniors coloured Mandalas and the preps drew themselves playing kindly with their friends.

Every person should feel they belong and are safe.

Every Face Has A Place

Everyone can be themselves

No Bossing

Play with everyone

Ugly, short, doesn’t matter

There is a peaceful place for everyone

Everyone has a right to be in this world- treat everyone equally

Everyone has their own talents to share

Everyone belongs and is welcome

Be friendly and kind

Don’t exclude

Take chances

Include everyone

Everyone counts

Everywhere you go everyone is happy

We are all equal

We are free

We have the right to do things

Be yourself

Leave no one out

Everyone can be happy wherever they go

Everyone has a place where they can be happy

You should be able to fit in anywhere

Everyone has a chance to have a say

There’s always a way to be happy

Someone will always love you

Even if you are from a different country you belong

We are all the same

Every face should be seen

Everywhere you go you’ll belong

Everyone should feel safe

We are all humans, no matter what you look like

ANTI BULLYING

by Barb Bellesini

What are you doing for Anti Bullying Day?

Go to Bullying No Way to get lots of ideas for you and your students:

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/NationalDay

Bullying is defined as a repeated pattern done to the same person/people, which is an intentional behaviour, causing distress and worry. Bullying can be in person or online, and can be hidden or obvious.

It can be Physical, Emotional, Cyber, Verbal or Social bullying. It is NOT a once off incident. One strategy the children are taught is to ‘TALK, WALK, TELL.’

TALKsay  ‘STOP I don’t like …’ This often stops the behaviour. If not then ….
WALK Get away, find a friend or adult;  Walk away, don’t stay  TELL– tell an adult, teacher or parent, and also TELL them how they FEEL.

ePoster Bullying TALK WALK TELL

The Cyber Bullying mantra is:
RECORD– Take a screen shot/photo/print/keep evidence
BLOCK-  Block&/or Delete contact, REPORT them online
TELL– an adult, ask for help.

Cyber Bullying RECORD BLOCK TELL

Some things to cover when talking about Bullying:

EMPATHY- Try ‘walking in other people’s shoes.’ Understanding people makes it easier to get along, most bullies have been bullied, many don’t have friends, some just need a friend, if you are kind to someone it is harder for them to be unkind to you. Often people bully for attention, as they have no friends and a low self esteem. Get to know them and it will be much harder for them to bully you.

DON’T BE A BYSTANDER- Watching, encouraging or joining in are all passive bullying. If you see someone in trouble, tell the person to STOP if it is safe to do so, and remove the victim from the danger. If it is not safe to do that, find help- a teacher, adult, other friends or call the police if you are out.

ePoster Don’t be a Bystander

RESTORATIVE PRACTICE- Give everyone a voice, talk over the situation and see how it has effected others and what you can do to make things right.

Songs: There are plenty out there:  THIS IS ME- by Keaka Settle. A current song from The Greatest Showman, is a great one to play and sing especially with Middles and Seniors and High School students.  Get Along by Guy Sebastian  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ka1Lgd3SAI  For Gr 3 up an Stand the Anthem by Charleigh & Justin Gere  http://www.schoolcounselingbyheart.com/2013/08/19/bullying-prevention-through-free-songs-posters-videos-dance-and-more/ For younger students there are many songs online e.g. Just Walk Away by Debbie and friends https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wlWLwP6etE

Make POSTERS. Here are some made by Yr 3-4 Students:

It was Random Acts of Kindness Day on Feb 17th. What did you do??

Have YOU performed an Act of Kindness today? Have YOU shown kindness to someone else today??

Each child from grade one to six, chose an Act of Kindness to carry out over FOUR weeks. They were expected to do it at least once a day. Some have chosen actions that can be performed more than once a day.

The idea is to make them more aware of how they are treating others and how they are being treated. We read a book about ‘Filling’ each other’s ‘Invisible Buckets’ and how doing acts of kindness to others, actually helps to fill our own bucket as well. When our bucket is full, we are happy, when it is empty, we are sad.

Some of the Acts of Kindness, how the children FELT doing the action and how the recipients felt are listed below. Some of my favourites are: Act: give a hug a day even when I feel angry How they felt: I felt like I am good! Recipients feelings: ‘Phew, I don’t have to nag her!’  (This child did her homework without being asked and imagined what her mum was thinking!)

The grade 6 children made some posters to put around the school to remind people to be kind to others.
http://picasion.com/gl/8VSi/
http://picasion.com/gl/8VSi/

Some of the ACTIONS
Make my bed; smile more; help people; help set the table; help cook dinner; get up when the alarm goes; go to bed when I’m told; get ready on time; give a compliment; do the dishes; empty the dishwasher; clean my room without being told; play with my brothers and sisters, don’t fight with them; clean my room; spend more time with my family; put my clothes in their place; give a fruit salad massage; listen;  fold the socks; help tidy the house; do my chores without being asked; fed the dog or cat; or clean up after the dog; play with people; help people with problems; pray for people; give a hug a day even when I feel angry; help parents around the house.

How does it FEEL?

Juniors: Happy;  bored (they didn’t like making their bed!!); great; OK; I enjoyed it; helpful; terrible (When they forgot and fought with their sibling!); normal; good about this activity because people liked it!; like I am good!; nice and helpful; it was really easy but it was hard!; I was happy when I did it; disappointed because I didn’t do it much (I forgot); very happy; really tired but happy; it was fun; I was a bit busy; really great; tired and very, very good;  I liked this activity because I like doing chores sometimes; this activity made me less tired (I went to bed when mum said!); I felt like helping everyone; I felt like I loved everyone; good doing this activity because I helped my mum and it helped her a lot; good because I’m used to it (Now gets out of bed with the alarm!); I felt happy and I care about people; really happy and it was easy; I loved it; it made me feel good; it was fun

Middles: My bucket filled up every time; good because my mum praised me; happy because I saw everyone smile; good because I got to help my family; that I should listen; I felt weird; good and happy playing with my cat; playing with my brother was hard; happy when I got to talk to them again; fantastic; really happy to make people feel nice and happy; confident to do what I chose; weird and helpful; better and I also felt like I was making my family happier;  mine could have been better; I forgot to do it;  caring happy; happy to know my sister and brother were happy; terrible because I didn’t do it much; dumb; very, very, very, very, VERY happy!

How did your family / others feel?

Good because they don’t have to do it for me; Happy because they all gave a laugh and a smile; I think my family felt happy; happy because I’m going to bed;  my brother is thankful and so is my cat;  I think they tried to keep up the good work which was making them happy; good that I made my bed in the morning and say goodnight.

I think when I was quiet they enjoyed it; good because she was getting a hug from me every day.
They smiled when I helped them; Good because they didn’t have to wake me up and my brother and I wouldn’t be late for school; they felt relaxed; not as rushed and thankful!!!; helped happy and not stressed as much; grateful; confused like me; Good because I don’t usually play with her; I’m sure they liked my little idea; the other person felt brilliant; like they had more time to rest; pleased with me; I think other people would enjoy being with me more;

 Fill someone’s bucket today!!

How can we Dis-empower Bullies??

Bullying is hurtful, if you let it go on, it can change your life. If you are Cyber Bullied or someone bullies you in person, there are ways to help and ways to stop it. You can help yourself and/or you can have others who see it happening help you.

Remember that bullies have often been bullied themselves, could be lonely with few friends, and often have a very low self-esteemTHEY need your help as well as the Victim!

Here are some of the ways the Gr 3-6 students thought of to

www.GlitterTextOnline.com

TALK– say Stop I don’t like it ;
WALKwalk away from the situation;
TELL Tell an adult and ask for help

For CYBER BULLYING

SAVE– Print, screen shot, take a pic of the Cyber message for Evidence;
BLOCK– Block, delete and Report the contact;
TELL– tell an adult, show them your evidence, ask for help.

Stand up for the Victim

Step back

Ignore them

DON’T Cyber Bully or bully back

Show the evidence

Write the bully a kind letter, (telling them things that you like about them)

Change their mind

Don’t be a bystander

Get them to join in with you

Build victims confidence- talk to them, get them to play with you

Build the bullies self esteem – tell them about good things they can do, invite them to play with you, be kind to them- you might find they become kinder as well!

Use humour

Listen to both sides- ask Why they are bullying? How can we fix this?

Help to stop the fight

Be nice to them

Be friends with the person being bullied, stand up for them, play with them

Tell them something good about themselves

Don’t be a bystander, get others to help

Ignore and be friends again

Tell your teacher and mum and dad

Invite them to your place to play

Invite them to your birthday party

How will you Dis-empower and help both the Victims and Bullies????
